How UK Shoppers Cut Costs at OpenFix

OpenFix sells home and boiler cover for UK homeowners, alongside specialist landlord cover for rental properties. Its plans can cover boilers, central heating, plumbing, drains, electrics, pest control, locks and home security, depending on the option selected. OpenFix also includes an annual boiler service with every plan, while landlord plans include a Gas Safety Certificate (CP12) as standard.

This guide helps UK shoppers compare the real cost before joining, choose a suitable level of cover and avoid paying for protection they do not need. It focuses on the monthly payment, call-out choice, included services, waiting period and cancellation terms, so you can judge value from the full plan rather than a headline price alone.

Start with the cover you actually need

OpenFix lists four main homeowner plan types: Boiler, Heating, Home and Complete. A Boiler plan covers the boiler, controls and flue. Heating adds radiators and gas supply pipes, while Home adds plumbing, drains and electrics. Complete includes the broader range of protection, including pest control and home security.

Choose the narrowest plan that matches your household’s likely risks. If your priority is simply protection against a mains-gas boiler breakdown, broader cover may not be necessary. If you own an older property with several systems to maintain, wider cover may provide more useful protection, but check the precise inclusions before paying.

Compare monthly payments with call-out costs

OpenFix says customers can choose a £0, £60 or £99 call-out fee. A higher call-out fee reduces the monthly payment, but you pay that amount when an engineer visits for a repair. The £0 option costs more each month but avoids an additional repair charge, while the higher-fee choices may suit shoppers who want to reduce regular outgoings.

Think about how you budget. Someone who wants predictable costs may prefer no call-out fee. Someone who mainly wants low monthly payments may consider a higher fee, provided they could meet it if a fault occurs. Remember that the call-out fee does not apply to the annual boiler service, according to OpenFix’s stated plan information.

Value the annual service correctly

Every OpenFix plan includes an annual boiler service, stated by the retailer as worth £99. The service includes safety and performance checks, including visual inspection, gas-use checks, pressure checks and testing that the boiler fires safely. OpenFix says servicing is normally scheduled between March and September.

When comparing plans, include the value of a service you would otherwise arrange separately, but do not treat it as cash savings unless you would genuinely have paid for one. The service is also subject to the plan’s terms, so read the agreement before assuming every boiler issue or maintenance task is included.

Check eligibility and exclusions

OpenFix says it covers domestic gas boilers of any make, model or age, provided they are connected to mains gas and in good working order when you join. Pre-existing faults are not covered. The retailer also excludes systems that have not been installed or maintained in line with manufacturer instructions, certain specialist items such as underfloor heating and towel rails, and work needed to trace and access hidden faults.

Review your boiler’s condition before starting a plan. Joining after a fault appears may not protect you against that existing problem. Check the service agreement for the exact wording, especially if your property has unusual heating equipment or you are considering cover for a rental property.

Allow for the waiting period

OpenFix’s FAQ states that new plans have a 14-day waiting period before a repair can be requested. Problems occurring before cover starts or during the first 13 days are not included. This means a plan is not a substitute for arranging an urgent repair when a boiler or home system has already failed.

Choose a start date that fits your circumstances and keep confirmation of the plan details. OpenFix says customers can select their preferred start date, with the first payment taken around 14 days after that date and the remaining eleven monthly payments following at around the same time each month.

Before you pay

Check the plan summary, payment schedule and call-out selection on the final screen. Confirm that the property is eligible, the boiler is working properly and the level of cover includes the systems you want protected. For landlords, confirm that the plan includes the annual CP12 and check whether the property and gas appliances meet the stated requirements.

If the retailer presents a promotional-code field at checkout, enter a code only if it is clearly applicable and accepted before payment. If no code field appears, check the final price, plan terms and any current on-page offer instead. Do not assume a code can be added later, that offers can be combined or that a discount is active unless the checkout confirms it.

Use OpenFix UK deals carefully

OpenFix may display promotional messaging during the quoting or plan-selection process, but shoppers should verify the offer on the page where they join. Look for the qualifying plan, customer type, start-date conditions and any expiry information. A saving shown for switching providers may not apply to every customer or every plan, so compare the displayed monthly total with the standard cost before deciding.

Also consider the first-year and renewal position. OpenFix says plans run for 12 months, payments are made monthly by Direct Debit and renewal prices may change because of inflation, tax changes and operating costs. A low starting payment is useful only if the ongoing terms remain acceptable to you.

Quick checklist

  • Select the right cover level rather than automatically choosing the broadest plan.
  • Compare the monthly payment against the £0, £60 and £99 call-out options.
  • Count the annual boiler service only as value you would otherwise use.
  • Confirm your boiler is mains gas, working properly and free from pre-existing faults.
  • Read exclusions for specialist equipment, hidden faults and maintenance conditions.
  • Remember that new plans have a 14-day waiting period for repairs.
  • Check the final total and payment schedule before authorising monthly Direct Debit.
  • If a code field appears, verify that the code is accepted before completing checkout.
  • Review cancellation and renewal terms, including possible administration charges.

For a final checkout check, review the OpenFix discount codes page before selecting your plan, then confirm any offer directly in the OpenFix quote or payment screen.
